Common questions
Does Kinly cost anything?
No. Kinly is free: no charge, no subscription, and no paid tier. Nothing is held back for people who pay, and there are no adverts.
If that ever changed, you would be told well in advance and nothing would be charged without your agreement. That is a commitment in the terms, not just a promise on a web page.
How do I add someone to my Circle?
Open the Circle tab and choose to invite someone. Kinly creates a link you can send however you like — message, email, in person. They open it, accept, and they are in. The link is valid for seven days and works once.
Nobody is added without accepting, so a Circle can never contain someone who does not know they are in it.
Somebody sent me an invite link and nothing happens when I tap it
That usually means Kinly is not installed on that phone. The link opens a page on this site explaining what the invitation is, and showing the code in large type so you can type it in by hand once you have installed the app.
If you do have Kinly installed and the link still does nothing, open the app, go to the Circle tab, and enter the code from the message manually.
How do I leave somebody's Circle?
Open the Circle tab. Below your own Circle is the list of Circles you are in. Remove yourself from the one you want to leave.
You do not need their permission, you are not asked for a reason, and they are not asked to approve it. The same applies in reverse: you can remove anyone from your own Circle at any time.
What happens when I press the button?
A short countdown runs — three seconds by default, and you can set it to anything from zero to five in Settings — so a press you did not mean can be cancelled. When it reaches zero, everyone in your Circle is sent a notification, and your location starts being shared with them.
They can reply to say they are on their way, that they are calling 999, that they have arrived, or that they cannot help. Everyone who was alerted sees those replies, so nobody duplicates somebody else’s effort.
Sharing stops the moment you mark yourself safe or cancel the alert.
My Circle is empty. Can I still use Kinly?
Yes. Kinly never blocks you from reaching the button because your Circle is empty — that would be a wall you could not get past on your own, since adding someone needs a second person to accept.
With an empty Circle the alert screen shows a Call 999 button and a prompt to add people. Being in someone else’s Circle without having one of your own is also perfectly normal, and Kinly treats it as a complete setup.
Notifications are not arriving
Work through these in order:
- Check notifications are allowed for Kinly in your phone’s settings, and that they are not silenced by a focus mode, Do Not Disturb or a sleep schedule.
- Check you are not in battery saver. Both platforms restrict background delivery aggressively when it is on.
- Open Kinly and sign in again. This refreshes the token your phone uses to receive alerts, which can go stale after a reinstall or a phone transfer.
If none of that helps, email support@kinly.help with your phone model and operating system version.
Can anyone see where I am when I have not sent an alert?
No. Your location is recorded and shared only while an alert you sent is active. There is no screen in Kinly where one person can look up another, and no setting that shares a location continuously. The feature does not exist.
The privacy policy sets this out in full.
Does Kinly call the police or an ambulance?
No. Kinly tells the people you chose, and shows them where you are. Calling the emergency services is still something you, or one of them, has to do. Every alert screen has a Call 999 button for exactly that reason.
I have forgotten my password
On the sign-in screen, choose the forgotten password option and enter your email address. A reset link is sent to it.
If you signed up with Apple or Google, you do not have a Kinly password — sign in with the same provider you used originally.
How do I delete my account?
In the app: Settings, then Delete account. It is a deletion, not a deactivation, and it is permanent.
Without the app installed, you can request deletion here. That page also sets out exactly what is deleted and what is kept.
Can a parent use Kinly to check where their child is?
No, and this is not an oversight. Kinly has no monitoring feature and cannot be configured into one. A parent can be in a child’s Circle like anyone else, and will be told — at the same moment as everyone else in that Circle — if the child sends an alert.
